Breathing happens quietly, constantly, without asking for permission. But what happens when the thing we need to survive becomes something that harms us?

The air we share connects every one of us, and when it becomes polluted, the consequences reach far beyond what we can see.

THE AIR WE BREATHE

Air pollution happens when harmful particles, gases or other substances alter the natural composition of the atmosphere.

Cars and other vehicles release nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Industry and power generation can release a range of pollutants, while agriculture contributes pollutants such as ammonia. Even inside our homes, burning fuels for cooking and heating can create harmful pollution. WHO

The scale of exposure is enormous. The World Health Organization estimates that 99% of the world's population breathes air that puts them at risk. The combined effects of outdoor and household air pollution are associated with around 7 million premature deaths every year. WHO

WHEN BREATHING BECOMES HARMFUL

Long-term exposure to polluted air can contribute to heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and chronic respiratory diseases. Pollution can also affect children as they grow, with exposure to pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide associated with impacts on respiratory health. WHO GOV.UK

This makes clean air more than an environmental issue. It is a basic part of our everyday lives. Every journey to school or work, every walk through a park, every game played outside depends on the same invisible resource.

And it is not distributed equally. The people most exposed to pollution are often those with the least control over where they live, work or how they travel. Creating cleaner air therefore means creating healthier environments for everyone.

AN ECOSYSTEM THAT BREATHES

Humans are not the only ones affected.

The atmosphere is part of a much larger system connecting forests, rivers, soils, oceans, plants and animals. When pollutants fall from the atmosphere onto land and water, they can alter the chemistry of entire ecosystems.

The effects can ripple through food webs and ecosystems. Pollution does not simply disappear once it leaves the exhaust pipe or chimney — it can move through the environment, changing the conditions that plants, insects, birds and other animals depend upon.

The air we breathe is therefore part of something much bigger. Protecting it means protecting the intricate systems that make life possible.

RECLAIMING CLEAN AIR

We can make a difference.

Cleaner public transport and active travel can reduce emissions from road vehicles. Renewable energy can replace combustion-based power generation. Better-insulated homes can reduce the amount of energy needed for heating, while cleaner technologies can reduce pollution from industry and agriculture. WHO

These changes do not have to be about giving things up. They can be about creating something better — quieter streets, healthier cities, cleaner energy and more resilient ecosystems.

There is also an important connection between clean air and climate action. Many sources of air pollution, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, also produce greenhouse gases. Reducing these emissions can therefore improve human health while helping to address climate change. WHO

Ultimately, clean air is something we all have a stake in. It belongs to no single person, country or species. Every breath is part of a shared system — moving between people, plants, animals and the atmosphere around us.

We cannot stop breathing. But we can change what we put into the air.

And by doing so, we can reclaim something that should never have been taken from us: the freedom to breathe clean air.
